Overview
Assisted Living encompasses a broad range of senior living facilities and
services. In general, Assisted Living Communities offer a combination of
housing, healthcare and personal care to seniors who require assistance with
daily living activities. Residences can be freestanding condos or bungalows,
or part of a network of apartments. Homes are outfitted with handrails, wheelchair
access and emergency-call devices. Assisted Living maintains seniors’ privacy
and dignity by offering daily assistance, but with respect for independence
and individual lifestyle preferences.
What to expect
Residents of Assisted Living Communities should expect services personalized to their individual needs. Daily aid is provided for seniors who need assistance with meals, bathing, dressing and taking medication. These facilities are also designed to cope with the unexpected, such as falls, mental decline or sudden health issues.
Seniors also have access to many of the same social and recreational activities offered by Independent Retirement Communities. There are often planned social events and outings, and communal meals are offered to encourage social interaction. Residents have access to housekeeping, laundry and meals options, as well as transportation services.
Who is it ideal for?
Seniors who need help with one or more daily living activities, but are otherwise independent. Most residents have some physical or mental inhibition, but do not require constant 24-hour monitoring and care.
Assisted Living is ideal for seniors who may be living with a child or family member but desire more autonomy; have tried home care but found the hours inconvenient or the caregiver unreliable; or desire more social interaction than home care offers. Top
